Roof replacement after Texas hail: a calm guide

After a hailstorm, door knockers and flyers appear within days. The best decisions are made calmly, with a clear understanding of what was damaged and what a new roof should do for your home.

What hail damage actually looks like

Hail damage is not always visible from the ground. On asphalt shingles it often appears as dark spots where granules have been knocked loose, soft bruises in the mat, or cracked tabs. Gutters, vents, window screens and air conditioning fins often show dents first and are useful clues that the roof deserves a closer look.

Granule loss matters because those granules protect shingles from the sun. A roof can keep out water after a storm and still have lost much of its remaining life.

Steps to take after a storm

A little documentation early on makes everything that follows easier.

  • Photograph any visible damage to the roof, gutters, siding and outdoor equipment
  • Check ceilings and the attic for new stains or damp insulation
  • Arrange a careful inspection by someone who will show you photos of what they find
  • Review your homeowners policy, including your deductible and any time limits for claims
  • Avoid signing anything that assigns your insurance benefits before you understand it

Working with your insurance company

Your insurer will usually send an adjuster to assess the roof. It helps to have your contractor present, so that damage is identified together and nothing is missed. The insurance company decides what the policy covers. Our role is to document the condition of the roof clearly and to build exactly what is agreed in writing.

Texas law prohibits contractors from waiving or rebating a homeowner's insurance deductible. Any offer to cover your deductible is a warning sign, not a favor.

Choosing materials that last

If you are replacing a roof in hail country, it is worth considering impact-resistant materials. Shingles rated Class 4 under the UL 2218 standard are designed to withstand larger hail, and many Texas insurers offer premium discounts for them. Standing seam metal roofs resist hail and wind well, reflect heat, and suit both modern and traditional homes.

Color and ventilation also affect comfort. Lighter roofing and good attic ventilation can reduce heat build-up, which matters through a long Texas summer.

What a complete roof replacement includes

A roof is a system, not just the visible surface. A proper replacement includes removing the old roofing down to the deck, replacing any damaged decking, installing underlayment, new flashing at walls and chimneys, drip edge, pipe boots, and correct ridge and soffit ventilation. Ask any roofer to describe each of these in writing.

Permits and inspections

Several cities in our area require permits for roof replacement, and requirements vary from one city to the next. We handle permitting where it applies, so the work is inspected and documented for your records and for any future buyer.

Choosing who to trust

After a major storm, out-of-town crews often arrive to work through a neighborhood quickly and then move on. Before signing, ask for a written scope that lists every component of the roof, proof of insurance, and a clear explanation of who will be on site and who you call if a problem appears later.

A good roofer will be glad to answer these questions, and will never pressure you to sign the same day. Taking a few days to compare written proposals is one of the best ways to protect your home and your claim.

If a recent storm has you wondering about your roof, we are happy to take a careful look and share photos of exactly what we find. You will get a clear picture of where things stand, with no pressure attached.
